Across Ages: An opportunity to seize the energy of our elders to benefit the needs of our youth

In 2016, approximately 2.5 million baby boomers will turn 70 and there are many millions more behind them who are moving into a new stage of life.  Conversations about the aging population are often framed as a “problem to be solved”.  Another way to think about it, however, is “an opportunity to be seized”. Many in this generation embraced, and fought for, change—changes which are evident in our society today.   Boomer activism influenced attitudes on race, gender, sex, musical taste, and just about everything in the world they inherited.  And, they are still doing it. Older adults get deeply involved in volunteering.  They realize there is “a lot of gas left in the tank” and they want to leave a legacy of service.  Across Ages offers that opportunity. Are you looking for way to support youth in your community? Across Ages is a mentoring program which intentionally recruits adults 60+ and matches them with vulnerable youth.  Originally funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as a drug prevention project, Across Ages demonstrated statistically significant positive change for mentees: increased school attendance, better in-school behavior, decreased substance use, enhanced problem-solving skills and improved relationships with adults and peers. Hear a conversation with Dr. Andrea Taylor, Across Ages developer, and learn first- hand how the program works and what you need to know to start the program in your community.  Across Ages provides materials, templates, training and technical assistance to help you.
